Gematria is an alphanumeric code that gives a number to a name, word or phrase according to its letters. A single word can yield several values depending on the cipher used.
Originally developed for the Hebrew language, its principle has been carried over to Greek, English and other languages. Gematria is said to be the method by which the world was spoken into existence, and we are doing the same here with the Cipher Evolution world.

Add all nine totals together and keep adding the digits until one number from 1 to 9 is left. That is the CCN cipher, and it sets each character's aura.
The same name always gives the same nine numbers, so the same name always makes the same character.
Seven steps of evolution
Enter a name
Any name in the Character Generator. Its letters are scored by the nine ciphers.
The numbers become a character
Each cipher drives one trait, in the order of the original design: gender, race, hair, skin, body, eyes, height, clothing and the item in their hand. Combinations of ciphers add accessories, age and emotion.
Bring them to life
If nobody has the name yet, the character is available and looking for a new home. Once born, the name is taken.
Find a match
Characters are matched through correspondences between their values: a mirror is the same total in the same cipher, a resonance is the same reduced number, an echo is one character's total turning up in a different cipher of the other, and a shared aura counts too. Enough correspondences and the other character is willing.
Merge in the Evolution Chamber
Both characters are invited into the chamber (don't worry, it's totally young viewer friendly) and merged. For each cipher the child inherits one parent's value, and sometimes a blend of both. Close relatives cannot merge.
A name from the pool
The child is given the name from the Pool of Available Names whose own values sit closest to the values calculated at birth. If a parent does not like it, both can agree to switch to the next corresponding name.
The Custody Battle
Each parent chooses to fight for custody or give up. If only one fights, they keep the child. If both fight, the Custody Algorithm compares each parent's values with the child's and the higher Custody Value wins. If neither fights, the child is not born and the name returns to the pool.
Every birth is recorded
The moment a character is born, whether adopted or won in a custody battle, is written into the world with the positions of the Sun and Moon. That gives each character a Sun sign and its decan, with the decan's ruling planet and its card from the Hermetic tarot, a Moon sign, and the planet that rules the day they were born.
The founders were all born on 10 November 2021, the day the first character generator went live, under the second decan of Scorpio: the Six of Cups, Lord of Pleasure.
Paths and Sephiroth
Every character also stands on the Hermetic Tree of Life. Their CCN cipher places them in one of the Sephiroth, from Kether, the Crown, to Yesod, the Foundation, each with its quality in numerology. Their Sun and Moon signs give them two of the twenty-two paths, each with its Hebrew letter and tarot trump.
